Alton Mitchell

Alton L. Mitchell, Jr, formerly of Bar Harbor, peacefully passed away surrounded by family and furry friends on January 26th, 2018, at his home in Newton, North Carolina. Alton was born on October 11, 1938 to Alton Mitchell Sr. and Vera (Harper) Mitchell in Bernard, Maine. Alton married Janet (McFarland) Mitchell in 1960, celebrating 49 years of marriage before her passing September 7, 2009.

Alton retired from EG Jordan Oil, where he worked as a bookkeeper, to care for his wife when her health declined. Alton was a devoted husband, patient father, loving grandfather, and will be sorely missed by his children Gregg (and Janet), Terri, and Jennie (and Brian), and grandchildren Chris, Max, Nathan, and Ruby. Alton enjoyed the time spent in his new North Carolina home, enjoying the leisurely lifestyle, warm weather and friendly people, and will be missed by the many neighbors and friends made there. Alton leaves many behind in Maine and across the country, including relatives, friends, and colleagues— far too many to mention. He enjoyed the company of canine companions- Peppercorn, Franklin, and Mr Bean- and they remained devoted to him and at his side until his passing.

Alton had a fun-loving spirit and led a full life, open to new experiences, opportunities, and challenges. He handled obstacles with grace and wisdom, and we will miss his loyalty, kindness, and humor. Life simply won’t be the same without him.
