Bert Evans

August 17, 1944 — February 13, 2016

Isaac “Bert” Evans, 71 of Hickory entered the presence of his Savior on Saturday, February 13, 2016, from his residence. He was born August 17, 1944, in Columbus, GA, the son of the late Isaac C. Evans, III, and the late LaVelle Mauldin Evans Harrell. Affectionately called “Bert” by all who knew him, he had been in failing health for several months. His adoring sisters, Jeannine Glaze of the home and Judy Custer of Hickory were with him, as well as his loving caregiver, Nancy Banks, singing Jesus Loves Me and Savior Like A Shepherd Lead Us, two of his favorite songs. Having “special needs” since birth with physical and mental limitations, he knew no boundaries when it came to loving others, quickly forgiving any who offended him, and trusting the Lord to meet his every need with his child-like faith. Without exception, everyone in his family was the beneficiary of Bert's cheerful, contented ways! Oh, how much they all learned from him! In addition to his sisters, two nephews, Jonathan Custer (wife Cassie) of Woodruff, SC, and Clayton Custer (wife Becky) from Greenville, SC, niece Marsha Landry (husband Peter) of Cary, NC, great nieces Sarah, Madison, Esther, Sophia, and Ava, great nephews Drew, Nicolas, Wil, Gideon, Nathan, Clayton, and Eli, great-great niece Emma, and great-great nephew Carson survive him. He is also survived by numerous cousins as well as two aunts whom he affectionately loved, Anne Sulteen of Hickory and Louise Mauldin of Milledgeville, GA. In addition to his parents, a loving stepfather, William “Daddy Bill” Lumpkin, preceded him in death. The funeral will be 11 am Friday, February 19, at Tabernacle Baptist Church in Hickory with Pastor Scott Hooks officiating. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 10-11 am, Friday, February 19, 2016 at the church. Memorials may be made to Tabernacle Christian School, 1225 29th Avenue Drive, Hickory, NC 28601 or to Catawba Regional Hospice, 3975 Robinson Road, Newton, NC, 28658. The family wishes to express a special thank you to Dr. Stephen McIntyre, hospice nurses Jean Rowe and Katie Isenhour, and previous care givers, Linda Cooper and Tina Taylor. Please express a condolence online for the Evans family; www.JenkinsFuneralHome.net. The family of Bert Evans has entrusted arrangements to Jenkins Funeral Home in Newton.
