Bill Gene Sigmon, 81 of 23rd Ave NE Hickory, died Wednesday January 20, 2009 at Palliative CareCenter and Hospice of Catawba Valley. Born June 27, 1928, he was the son of the late William Samuel and Vinnie Ola Hefner Sigmon. He was a graduate of Hickory High School, and attended Clevenger Business College. He was a Seabeeâ??s and US Navy Veteran, serving as a crewman aboard the USS Newport News at its commissioning. He was the retired owner of Custom Homes of Catawba County, Inc., was a founding father and a charter member of New Hope Baptist Church where he served faithfully in many capacities, Deacon, Trustee, House and Grounds, and numerous other committees, including Building Committee where he was instrumental in the construction of New Hope Baptist Church facilities. He and his wife, Wanda, hosted the first Sunday School meeting in their home. He was a member and a former President of the Hickory Civitan Club and a member of American Legion Post 48. His wife of 56 years, Wanda Buchanan Sigmon of the home; a son, William (Bert) A. Sigmon and wife Eva of Morganton; a daughter, Ginny Sigmon Abee and husband Craig of Greenville, SC; a sister, Betty Sigmon Lovin of Conover and five grandchildren, Adam Setzer and wife Siri Rhyne, Isaac Abee, Hannah Abee, Rachel Fisher and Graham Sigmon survive him. In addition to his parents, two brothers, Paul H. Sigmon and Franklin D. Sigmon preceded him in death. The Celebration of Life Service for Bill Sigmon will be 2:00 p.m. Sunday January 24, 2009 at New Hope Baptist Church with Rev. Dale Watts officiating. The family will receive friends from 12:30-2:00 p.m. at the church prior to the service.
