Brenda Oakes

Brenda Joyce Winters Oakes, 72 of Conover died Tuesday, September 24, 2013 at her residence. Born December 14, 1940 in Avery County, NC, she was the daughter of Margaret Nellie Hampton Winters of Hickory and the late Leonard Calvin Winters. Brenda worked for 24 years in the Child Nutrition Program for Hickory City Schools. She was a loving mother and grand-mother and a faithful lifelong member of the LDS Church. Her husband, Cecil Deryl Oakes preceded her in death. In addition to her mother Margaret; a daughter, Jill Reid of Salisbury, NC; three sons, Scott Winters Oakes of Gastonia, Mark Winters Oakes of Gastonia and Kirk Lee Oakes of Hickory; two sisters, Doris Marie Ollis of Hickory and Linda Kay Hawn and husband Tony of Hickory; two brothers, Robert Joseph Winters and wife Karen of Union Town, OH and Glenn Richard Winters and wife Debbie of Hickory; and five grand-children, Gavin Michael Oakes, Ronald Kay Reid III, Tanner Oakes, Melina Oakes and McKenzie Oakes survive her. The funeral will be 1:00 p.m. Friday, September 27, 2013 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Hickory with Bishop Mike Woods officiating. Burial will follow at Catawba Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 11:30-1:00 p.m. at the church. Pallbearers include Kirk Oakes, Michael Wease, Michael Winters, Ray Ollis, David Winters, Tanner Oakes and Gavin Oakes. In lieu of flowers, Memorials may be made to the Humanitarian Aid Fund of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 4065 North Center Street, Hickory, NC 28601.
