Carl Quinton Shell, 97, of Hickory died Saturday, June 8, 2019, at home. Born May 22nd, 1922, he was the son of the late Ed Shell and Ammie Hilton Shell and a lifelong resident of Hickory. He was married to the late Nina Burns Shell for seventy years and, since the beginning of their marriage, has been a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, where he was in regular attendance until recent years.
Carl had a career of thirty-five years at Snyder Paper and was a member of the Hickory Elks Lodge, where he served as its Exalted Ruler from 1967 to 1968. He loved the outdoors and was a frequent blood donor. As a young man, Carl served in the Army Air Corps during World War II as an aircraft mechanic.
He is survived by his son, Philip D. Shell, of the home; his daughter, Mrs. (Wade) Carla Canipe, Hickory; and his sister, Mildred Lee “Polly” Skipper, Hickory. He is also survived by three granddaughters: Ashlie D. Canipe, Mrs. (Johnny) Lauren Dozier, and Mrs. (Mike) Page Dabrowski; and three great-grandchildren: Sara Lindsley Shawver, Ava Leah Marie Shawver, Ethan Landon Shawver, and Landon Armstrong Dozier. His wife, Nina Burns Shell, preceded him in death, as well as his daughter, Mrs. (“Chip”) Sara S. Underdown, and thirteen of his siblings.
A memorial service will be held Friday, June 14th, at 10AM at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church with a reception to follow. The Shell family has entrusted arrangements to Jenkins Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Newton (828-464-1555).
