Carol Carter Price, 83, passed from the earth on April 12, 2019.
She died as she lived, with wit, humor and grace, never conceding the inevitable, a Rebel Without A
Pause. True to the life she lived, she engaged and entertained family and friends in the days before the
blue eyes that never lost their sparkle closed for good. Ultimately, she did not go quietly into the good
night, she went full throttle, with faith and wonder.
And to those who knew her, that was no surprise. Whether as with her memorable performance as
Gladys in the Lenoir Service League’s Follies or as the no-nonsense teacher whose imprint was indelible,
she was a force of nature, challenging and inspiring.
Carol was an educator for 35 years, most of those in the Caldwell County School system, a devoted
member of the First Baptist Church Lenoir. An insatiable curiosity kept her dedicated to the written
word, her love for writing, whether it be serial fiction or literature, a constant. She never met a
magazine or catalog she couldn’t – or wouldn’t - embrace. She was captain of her Appalachian State
University debate team, a Suma Cum Laude graduate, lifeguard and instructor at the family lake.
But her proudest achievement was her family.
She spent her final days at the Kirkwood Hospice of Lenoir with her husband of 61 years, Lewis, by her
side daily. “The best thing that ever happened to me,’’ she said repeatedly across the years, describing
what family and friends always recognized as a model marriage, the full bloom of an ideal union. Their
marriage was composed of respect and mutual admiration and seasoned with the wonderful salts of
tenderness. It was while she was still a student at Gastonia High that she met the ‘’good Christian boy’’
that would become her lifelong companion. They traveled the nation together, cooked and canned,
initiated annual Christmas and Super Bowl parties and never began or ended a day without a kiss.
In the process, she was the mother of two, Lew Price and Lora Price, of Franklin, TN and Courtney Ellis
and Sam Ellis, of Lenoir and grandmother of four – Thorn, Trey and Cade Ellis of Lenoir and Ciandra Cole
of Franklin, TN. There is still debate as to who carries the mantle of Golden Child, but testament to her
love of all that the answer will remain a mystery.
Services will be held at First Baptist Church of Lenoir on Tuesday, April 16th at 1:00pm.
