Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 62 years, Jeanette; daughter Susan Balke (and husband, David); daughter Sharon Francis (and husband, Mark); son Skip Money (and wife, Amanda); and grandsons Scott Whitener, Aaron Whitener, and Matthew Whitener.
In remembrance from his children: “Our Dad was an avid deer hunter. He taught us firearm safety and how to shoot by the time we were six years old. We had venison on the table many winter nights and he made the best deer stew ever. Our Dad loved to read; he gave us each a love for literature. Our Dad loved to sail and took his grandsons out with him to learn about sailing and tying knots. Our Dad loved chess and taught us to play. Our Dad was constantly building, remodeling, repairing car engines, and was hands on with projects his whole life. We learned many of these skills from him as well. Our Dad was a great teacher and throughout his life continued a love for learning. He used to tell the grandsons, ‘You can’t stop reading until you know all the words in all the books in all the world.’ Our Dad served in the U.S. Airforce from 1955 to 1959 as a boom operator refueling planes in flight over the artic circle. He loved to tell us stories about that time and how he, an NC Southern Baptist, met his wife to be, a daughter of Catholic Italian immigrants who lived in Bangor, Maine. Mom said it was love at first sight. This was our Dad. We will cherish the memories, the lessons, and the wisdom; and all he shared will live on in us.”
