Charles Schoendube

June 11, 1921 — October 9, 2009

Charles William Schoendube, 88, of Northwest Road, Hickory, died Friday October 9, 2009 at Palliative CareCenter and Hospice of Catawba Valley. Born June 11, 1921 in Manila, Philippines, he was the son of the late Charles Albert and Katty Jirousek Schoendube. A U.S. Citizen during WWll, the Japanese army interned Charles at Santo Tomas Prison Camp for 37 months. He was liberated by the U.S. Army February 2, 1945. He is a graduate of the University of Michigan with a degree in Electrical Engineering and worked as a Senior Design Engineer for GE for 35 years. During retirement and until age 87, he worked for 18 years, at CVCC as a math and physics tutor. Charles is fondly remembered for his keen sense of humor and his analytical mind. He excelled in challenging himself both mentally and physically. His wife Beverly Reed Schoendube of the home; three daughters, Karen Allman and her husband Buddy of Charlotte, Nancy Mitchell and her husband James of Hickory and Wendy Dye and her husband Billy of Monroe; two sisters, Mimi Ellis of DeLand, FL and Doris Barnett of Wheatland, CA; nine grandchildren, Gavin, Savannah and Barrett Mitchell, Bethany and Christian Allman, Lauren Allman Alvey and her husband Korie, Chelsie Deese, Morgan Dye and Dyllan Dye; two great grandchildren, Gabriel Alvey and Lukas Alvey survive him. A brother, Robert Schoendube preceded him in death. A celebration and worship service will be 2:00 pm, Monday at Corinth Reformed Church in Hickory with the Rev. Dr. Robert Thompson officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the church. Memorials may be made to Corinth Reformed Church, 150 16th Av NW Hickory, NC 28601-2458 or to Palliative CareCenter and Hospice of Catawba Valley, 3975 Robinson Road, Newton, NC 28658.
