Claude “Poppy” Pinkney Simmons, 83, of Newton, died Monday, January 25, 2021 at Catawba Valley Assisted Living. He went home to meet his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, as well as reunite with his late wife of 54 years, Bonnie “Bea” Simmons. Born August 18, 1937 he was the son of the late Clyde Emory and Beulah Mae Lutz Simmons. He was preceded in death by his brother, Joe Simmons and sisters, Ruby Nell Anthony and Dorthy Mae Simmons.
Heaven has gained the most wonderful husband, father, brother, uncle, grandfather and friend. Claude retired from Sprint Telephone Company. He was a veteran of the US Army. He was a member of Starmount Baptist Church for over 20 years, then a member of St. Paul’s Reformed Church where he enjoyed traveling and participating in Bible studies. Claude enjoyed working in the garden, providing canned tomatoes, pickles and green beans for all his friends and family. He loved to show his competitive side by playing Rook! He also made the best chocolate pies! Claude loved watching westerns, listening to gospel music and reading his Bible. He loved his two granddaughters very much and always spoke of how proud he was of them.
He is survived by his daughter, Robin Claudette Simmons Caldwell and husband, Kevin of Newton; and two grandchildren, Tori Goodmon and husband, Joshua of Kernersville, and Kelsey Caldwell of Kernersville.
A graveside service will be held Friday, January 29th at 12:00pm noon at Catawba Memorial Park. We would like to thank the staff at Catawba Valley Assisted Living for their professionalism and care they provided during his time there. In lieu of flowers, please send memorials to St. Paul’s Reformed Church.
