Cleveland Cauthen

December 8, 1946 — August 15, 2023

Cleveland Minas (Tizzy/Tiz) Cauthen was born in Newton, North Carolina on December
8, 1946 to the late Minas Cauthen and Tee Willa Wilson Cauthen. He departed this
earthly life on Tuesday, August 15, 2023 at the Kindred Care Hospital in Greensboro,
North Carolina.

He was educated at Central High School in Newton, North Carolina graduating in 1965
where he played baseball, football, and ran track. Cleveland earned a Bachelor of Science
Degree in Physical Education from Winston-Salem State University in 1972 where he
also played football. Tizzy was a “Die Hard” Winston-Salem State alumnae always
looking forward to “Homecoming.” He was a Vietnam veteran serving in the United
States Army as a sergeant. He also served in the Army National Guard. He retired from
Newton-Conover City Schools with over 20 years of service as a teacher and football
coach. Other employment included work at a local furniture factory, Diane’s Diary
Center, and Galaxy Grocery Store.

Cleveland was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church in Newton, North Carolina
where he served as an usher and was a member of the United Methodist Men. Until he
was unable, walking, washing and detailing his cars and others were things he enjoyed.
He also enjoyed watching sports, eating good food and being with family. Cleveland
was an outstanding father and mentor.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his two brothers, Minas
“Granny” Cauthen of Newton, North Carolina and John Wallace Wilson of Asheville,
North Carolina. He is survived by his sons Tyrone Brown and Jerome Brown of Hickory,
North Carolina; Cleveland Jerome (CJ)Cauthen and Curtis (Curt) Lee Cauthen of
Newton, North Carolina; mother of his sons CJ and Curt, Mrs. Betty Tyson Cauthen
Royal of Atlanta Georgia; sister Sarah Cauthen Harris of Raleigh, NC; and a host of
grandchildren, one great grandchild, nieces, nephews, aunts, cousins, other relatives
and special friends William Phostell Rice, Johnny Hunt, Milton Johnson, John Robinson,
Robert Lackey, and Jake Coulter.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the Catawba Valley Medical
Center, the Brian Center and the Green Rehabilitation facilities, Accordius Health in
Mooresville, North Carolina, Lake Norman Hospital, and Kindred Hospital in Greensboro,
North Carolina for attention and care. In addition to the aforementioned, the family
extends a heartfelt thank you to all who cared for Cleveland by calling, visiting, sending
cards, care baskets, praying and thinking about him.

The family will receive friends from 1-2PM Thursday, August 24, 2023 at Jenkins Funeral Home Celebration Center. The Funeral Service will follow at 2PM in the Jenkins Funeral Home Chapel.
