Rachel ?Rocky? Cutine Abernethy Matthews, 66 of Hounds Way, Conover died Thursday, September 20, 2012 at Catawba Valley Medical Center. Born April 30, 1946 in Catawba County, she was the daughter of the late David Marce Abernethy and Olive Ruth Norris Abernethy. Cutine went to Startown Elementary School and graduated from Fred T. Foard High School. She attended Wilson School of Nursing in Wilson, NC. She obtained her B.S. of Nursing at Lenoir Rhyne College and an Associate of Business Administration at CVCC. In addition, she was a First Lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force for the Nursing Corps. She also served one year of nursing in Saudi Arabia in 1991. In addition to her husband of 15 years, Roger S. Matthews of the home; four step-daughters, Janice Anne Matthews McGuane of Greenfield, MA, Donna Lee Matthews of Sacramento, CA, Nancy Lynn Matthews of Monrovia, CA and Deborah Sue Matthews Bartram of Ashburn, VA; a brother, Glenn Marce Abernethy and wife Joanne; a niece Glenda Cordray and husband Shep; and a great nephew, Luke Cordray survive her. The funeral will be Sunday, September 23, 2012 at St. Paul?s Reformed Church in Newton. Pastor Bud Painter of Westside Baptist Church in Maiden will officiate. Burial will follow at Conover Cemetery. Military rites will be provided by American Legion Post 16 of Newton. The family will receive friends 2-3:00 p.m., Sunday, September 23, 2012, one hour prior at the church.
