Dallas Carowan

November 15, 1926 — August 5, 2019

Dallas T. (“Dee”) Carowan, Jr., 92, of Newton died peacefully at home of natural causes on August 5, 2019.  Born on November 15, 1926 in Beaufort County, NC, he was the son of the late Dallas T. Carowan, Sr. and Ethel Midyette Carowan.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the United States Navy from 1944 to 1946, then again in the U.S. Navy Reserves from 1950-1954. He was proud to attend college at both Mars Hill College in Mars Hill, NC and Mercer College in Macon, GA, where he received his bachelor’s degree in Physical Education. An avid sports lover, he played baseball throughout his college career and went on to pitch for a minor league baseball team in Georgia for several years.

In 1958, he married Gloria (Smith) Carowan to whom he was married for 55 years before she preceded him in death in 2014. They started their life together in Morristown, TN, where Dee was active on the local school board and served as a deacon at Hillcrest Baptist Church. A natural salesman with an undaunted entrepreneurial spirit, Dee started his own business in Newton in 1978, Carowan Lumber Sales, which he successfully owned and operated for several decades.

Growing up the son of a tobacco farmer in Eastern North Carolina, Dee was known for his tireless work ethic and for his love of working in the outdoors, spending long hours tending his ample vegetable garden and splitting logs on his wooded property. He also had a passion for aviation (which his wife shared as a pilot in her own right), and he loved nothing more than flying his own Cessna 182 til the early 1980s.

Dee faithfully attended First Baptist Church of Hickory, NC for nearly 40 years. During many of his years there, he enjoyed singing in the church choir, as well as serving as Chairman of the Deacons and as a beloved Sunday School teacher.

He is survived by three children, Jeffrey P. Carowan and his wife, Jenni; Elizabeth Raines; DeAnne Filiatreault and her husband, James; a sister, Barbara Klepsig; six grandchildren, Hayley, Andy, Austin, Sam, Willis, and Lucy; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, as well as his sisters, Alene Morgan and Iola Gaylord; and his brother, Raeford Carrowan.

A small private graveside ceremony is being planned this fall at a family plot in Glen Alpine, NC.

Please sign the online guestbook at www.jenkinsfuneralhome.net. The Carowan family has entrusted arrangements to Jenkins Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Newton 828-464-1555.
