Doris Whitener

Doris Jean Poovey Whitener, 87, of Newton passed away Wednesday, October 20, 2021 at Carolina Caring. Born April 28th, 1934 she was the daughter of the late Pinkney Eli Poovey and Myrtle Marie Poovey.

Two sons, Tim Whitener and wife Jane and Bud Whitener and wife Robin; a daughter, Susan McClure and husband Jon; five grandchildren, David and Stephen Whitener, Eric McClure, Lauren Bond and Daniel Whitener; two adopted grandchildren, Spencer Kilby and Grace Kilby; four great grandchildren, Kristen, Devin, Ames and Luna; a sister, Carol Crouch and husband Jim; a brother, Wayne Poovey and wife Janice; her caregiver, Jo Setzer survive her.

Her husband, Norman Whitener; four sisters, Willie Alice Bumgarner, Faye Brietzman, Rose Lynn and Jo Ann Smith Rohrbacher; four brothers, Howard "Bud" Poovey, Paul Poovey, Roy Poovey and Sam Poovey preceded her in death.

The funeral will be 3:00 pm Sunday October 24, 2021 at Mesiah Lutheran Church in Hickory with Pastor Richard Schroder officiating. Burial will be at Fairview Cemetery in Hickory. The family will receive friends from 2-3:00 pm Sunday at the church.
