Dorothy Vandenburg

Dorothy Marie (Dottie) Vandenburg, 77, of Hickory passed on to her heavenly home Wednesday, October 19, 2022 at Carolina Caring after a courageous battle with cancer. Born April 10, 1945 to Horace and Marie Mace Whitener, she was one of six children.
After attending Fred T. Foard High School, Dottie found her career at Sherrill Furniture Company, where she worked for over 20 years. In 1970, Dottie met and married Tony (Jody) Vandenburg. Even though they were complete opposites, they complemented each other and recently celebrated their 52nd wedding anniversary.
Dottie was a ray of sunshine with boundless energy. She was a tireless worker in her church and served for many years as the lunch coordinator for the seniors. She was known for the cakes she made for church fundraisers and especially for her delicious peanut brittle which she made every Christmas for gifts. In addition, she and her husband were devoted members of the church choir. Her joy and love of life were inspirational to many.
Dottie was a devoted mother to two sons, Donnie Lee who predeceased his mother and Gary Wayne Vandenburg. In addition to her husband and son, Dottie is survived by her brothers Danny Ray Whitener (Pam) and Paul Whitener, a sister Julia Hefner (Donald), special niece Renae Sigmon, and numerous other beloved relatives. She was predeceased by Patricia (Patsy) Whitener VanHorn and a brother Nathaniel Whitener.
The family will receive friends from 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM Friday, October 21, 2022, at Lifepoint Church Hickory. The memorial service will be 2:00 PM Friday, October 21, 2022, at Lifepoint Church Hickory with Pastor Matthew Prince officiating.
The family would like to thank all the brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, friends and church family that surrounded Dottie with continuous love and support from her diagnosis to the end of her journey. They would also like to express a special thank you to Carolina Caring for their love and kindness during her stay there.
