Dr. Gilbert Wergowske

Gilbert Lawrence Wergowske, M.D, was born in Hamilton County, Cincinnati, Ohio on August 7, 1947, to Gilbert Joseph Wergowske (1919; Norwood, Ohio) and Evelyn Elizabeth, Nee; O’Hara Wergowske; (1919; Cincinnati, Ohio). He has one brother, David James Wergowske (1949) currently living in Montgomery, Alabama.

Gil is survived by: His wife Rita Wergowske (of nearly 30 years) and 4 of 5 stepchildren and one “informally adopted son from Hawaii. Kirsten Wall-Cole, the eldest of the 5 children, passed away after a 6-year long struggle with cancer, on April 26, 2022. (Survived by her two children, Alyssa & Gabriela). Brian Wall, 2nd eldest, is living in Orange County, California, with his two children, Isabella & Sophia. Brandon Wall, third eldest, lives in Vacaville, CA with his wife, Amanda, and three children, Jacob, Kelsey & Logan. Stephanie Wall-Wiltz, forth eldest, lives in Gold Canyon, AZ with her husband, Justin Wiltz and her two sons, Kurtis and Kristopher Wall.
Braley Webb, fifth eldest, lives in Newton, North Carolina. Philip Cabanila, our “Hanai” son (by informal adoption) lives with his wife Kristin and (4) children in Hawaii.

Dr. Gilbert Wergowske specialized in Internal Medicine, with a sub-specialty in Geriatric medicine. He graduated with honors from the Universidad de Guadalajara, class of 1978 and completed a Residency at Wright State University, Internal Medicine and Fellowship at University of Hawaii, Geriatric Internal Medicine. As a board-certified doctor, he practiced medicine in Ohio, Hawaii and California, taught medicine as an assistant and associate professor, belonged to several professional societies and authored numerous books and publications. In addition, Gilbert served as a colonel in the US military USAF Reserve Medical Corps until his retirement in 2011.

He was well loved by his patients and respected by his colleagues. He will be dearly missed by all who worked with him in a variety of settings. He will be greatly missed by his wife and family and we will cherish his generosity and love.

Funeral Mass will be held 11:30am, Tuesday, January 23, 2024, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 720 W 13th St, Newton, NC 28658. The family will receive friends and family from 11:00am-11:30am. Burial will follow at Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery.
