Dwight Waitzel Sigmon, 84 of Newton died Thursday, November 20th, 2014 at Catawba Regional Hospice. Born February 6th, 1930 he was the son of the late Johnson Lee Sigmon and Frances Aline Clontz Sigmon. His wife of 16 years, Juanita Holliday Sigmon of the home, three sons, Mark Sigmon and wife Laura of West Chester, Ohio, Neil Sigmon and wife Mandy of Christiansburg, VA and Brian Sigmon and wife Crystal of Raleigh; a stepson, Jody Holliday and wife Erica of Hiddenite; two step daughters, Nina Heck and husband Kim of Hickory and Elizabeth H. Schmiedicke and husband Brad of Memphis, TN; a brother Eugene Sigmon and wife Rebecca of Hudson; 12 grandchildren, Katie Sigmon, Kevin Sigmon, Ben Sigmon, Jonathan Sigmon, James Sigmon, Jason Holliday, Kristy H. Main, Amber Abernethy, Austin Heck, Ben Schmiedicke, Aaron Schmiedicke, Samantha Pennell; and two great-grandchildren, Alley Stacks Coffey and Alek Abernethy and nephews Stephen Sigmon and Michael Sigmon survive him. Mr. Sigmon served in the US Army in Germany during the Korean War from 1951-1953; he returned to work for General Electric in Hickory for 34 years as a supervisor. He was an avid gardener, wood worker and furniture maker. He loved bowling, walking and traveling. He was an active and devoted member of St. Paul's Reformed Church in Startown where he was the treasurer of the Brotherhood for 50 years and a deacon and Elder. He was a member of American Legion Post 48 in Hickory for 45 years. He was a charter member of the Startown Lions Club and an active member for 40 years. He helped charter the General Electric Men's Breakfast Club in 1997, which still meets today. His first wife of 39 years, Klendyal Hoyle Sigmon and a brother Henry Carrol Sigmon preceded him in death. The funeral will be 2:00 pm Sunday, November 23, 2014 at St. Paul's Reformed Church with Pastor John Bigelow officiating. Burial will follow at Catawba Memorial Park with the American Legion Post 48 providing military rites. The family will receive friends from 12:30-2:00 pm Sunday, November 23rd, 2014 at the church.
