Elenor “Ginger” Brooks Pender, 96, or Hickory died Friday, December 22, at Trinity Village. Born January 28th, 1927 in Overton, MO. She was the daughter of the late Redford Franklin Odom and Wilmoth Katherine (King) Odom.
Ginger loved to dance, garden, fish, cook, camp and craft, but most of all she loved people. At 70 yrs young she made her first sky dive and at 71 she made her second with her son, James.
Ginger started working on the family farm in Boonville, MO as a little girl and at age 14 went to work at Trout’s Bakery in Boonville filling long john’s. Ginger came to California after high school graduation in 1945 and worked in the bakery of Boys Market and eventually learned to decorate wedding and birthday cakes at Van De Camps Bakery. She also worked as a cafeteria manager for 5 yrs at Wescov Elementary in West Covina, CA. Ginger retired at age 77.
Her first husband Charles Tatum and her second, Fred Pender, both preceded her in death, as did her sister Alice Hatcher and brother Ron Odom. She is survived by her 3 sons Terry, Kurtis and James, their wives Christie, Joyce and Linda, daughter in law Joy Tatum, 12 grand children, 13 great grandchildren and 4 great great grandchildren. Ginger was simply known by her many grand children as “Super G”.
Elenor and Charles married in 1947 and had 5 children, Kathy, Terry, Debbie, Kurtis and James. She also raised her stepson Richard. After the passing of Charles in 1968, Ginger met her husband Fred. They married on October 18, 1980 in Catalina Island, CA. They had a beautiful life together until his death in 2014. Ginger and Fred enjoyed working in Hospice Care together, where she was a volunteer coordinator and grief counselor. Ginger later served as the eldest board member of Serving Our Seniors, a local organization inspired by herself.
A Celebration Of Life will be held in her honor from 11:00 am-3:00 pm the weekend of April 27th, 2024 in the Celebration Center at Jenkins Funeral Home.
