Elizabeth “Libby'' Ann Morton left her earthly body on December 20, 2022. She was preceded in death by her mother and father, Carrie Ann and RoyLee Campbell, her brothers Dale Lambert and Grady Campbell and her sister Reba Cook. She is survived by the love of her life and husband of 38 years, George Ray Morton of Newton, NC her daughters Tammy Speaks and Keith Maples of Kings Mountain, NC and Wendi and husband Pedro Gonzalez of Newton, NC. Additionally, she was also survived by her six grandchildren, Michelle, Tabitha and husband Chris, Elizabeth and husband Zeb, Arianna and wife Asha, Bridget, and Alex, honorary grandchildren Easton and Jaxson, and fourteen great grandchildren, Zevion, Lucas, Savannah, Scarlette, Camden, Declan, Colton, Laurence, Karmin, Mia, Jaelynn, Allie, Jackson and Abigail. She was also survived by her sister Diane Shepherd and fiance Ray Houston of Hickory, NC, her brother Roger Campbell of Statesville, NC and a whole host of nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews that she loved dearly.
Libby was a wonderful mom to Tammy and Wendi. She taught them how to be loving, how to be wonderful moms, so much so that both are lovingly called Maw Maw by their own grandchildren, to be a little more like her. She was always there, rocking them when they cried, drying their tears, and expressing her constant and unwavering love through every stage of their lives.
Libby would tell you that her greatest accomplishment was being a Maw Maw to so many, blood or not she emphatically expressed that blood is not all that mattered. She was called “Maw Maw” or “Maw” by so many a count is not possible. She was the hands on Maw Maw, the one who slept in a pallet on the floor with her grandchildren for sleepovers and woke up the next morning to fry bologna and make a pot of grits (the best in the world). The one who continued to do that with her great grandchildren and great nieces and nephews keeping them as often as possible, right up to her last couple of weeks on this earth. She would always offer to keep the kids just so that she could express to each and every one that they were her favorite, lying to them all because she loved them all irrevocably and the same.
Libby worked for thirty-one years at Wesley Hall in Hickory, NC where the owners would introduce her by expressing that she “came with the building”. She was a utility worker in their sewing department but also served there as a mentor, a joker, a friend, a lover of all, a family member and beyond. She was loved so much by her coworkers that became family. Her empty station will be a reminder of her absence but also of the love that she provided to each and every person who worked with her.
The family remembers Libby as so many things, a wife, a mother, a maw maw, a maw, a rock, a practical joker, a lover of all people, silly, fun, loving (oh so loving) and the list goes on and on. We will never recover from the hole that has been left but we are going to try to fill it and others with so much love in remembrance of her and the legacy that she has left behind.
The visitation will be 4-6PM January 4th at Jenkins Funeral Home.
