Erma Jean Gortney, 72 of Hickory passed away peacefully Tuesday, September 9, 2014 at Catawba Region Hospice House, surrounded by her family. She was born January 15, 1942 daughter of the late Clifford Deyton and Hassie Deyton. Erma was a people person who enjoyed reading, cooking, movies and most of all being with her family. She was employed for 22 years with Walmart in Hickory providing smiles and serving her customers at register 1. She will be missed by her Walmart family and customers. Left to cherish her memories are her loving husband of 54 years, Ted Gortney, daughters and sons in-law, Tina Gortney Farris and Kevin of Rutherford College; Angela Gortney Yoder and Terry of Hickory; Nikki Gortney Fisher and Eric of Hickory; sisters and brother in-laws, Norma Ann Day and Carroll of Hickory; Brenda Deyton Dover and Blake of Newton; Glenda Edwards and Danny of Burnsville; brother and sister in-law, Buster Deyton and Ingrid of Burnsville; grandchildren and spouses, Michael Farris and Jana; Chasity Cline; Dr. T.J. Yoder and Claire; Alex Fisher and Darian Fisher; 4 great-grandchildren; 2 step great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her brother, J.W. Deyton. The celebration of her life will be held Saturday, September 13, 2014 at 2:00 pm Jenkins Funeral Home Chapel, 4081 Startown Rd., Newton, with Pastor Eddie Sapoch officiating. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens. The family will have a time of greeting friends prior to the service from 12:00 - 1:45 pm on Saturday at Jenkins Funeral Home .
