Francis Joseph Schmitt, 85, of Claremont passed away Saturday, March 2nd, 2019 at Carolina Caring. Born February 16th, 1934 in the Bronx, he was the son of the late Christian Schmitt and Amelia Porubsky Schmitt. He attended Mount Saint Michael's Academy, and went on to receive a Bachelor's degree from Manhattan College and a Master's degree from Northwestern University.
During his nearly 40-year career with United Airlines, he held a variety of US and International positions concluding as the General Manager at Charlotte Douglas Airport, receiving accolades throughout his career for outstanding performance, professionalism, and leadership skills. After retirement, he received his Class-A license, driving a long-haul 18-wheeler followed by driving a bus for Christian Tours. He also assisted his nephew in transporting luxury yachts to a variety of places in North and South America to include going through the Panama Canal. His zest for life and love for his family, kept him active, attending sporting events, graduations, and key milestones with his family.
His wife Linda D. Schmitt; brother John H. Schmitt; children Michele Schmitt, Darlene Schmitt Rhoades (Michael), Debra Schmitt Butler (Christian), Frank Schmitt, William Schmitt, Brian Schmitt, Brian Smith (LaShawn), Peyton Smith (Andrea); grandchildren Sean Quintana (Hannah), Ashley Dierickx (Chad), Justin McAulay (Hannah), Jared McAulay (Lily), Hannah Smith, Austin Smith (Bridgette), Sidney Givens (Michael), Elias Smith, Dalton Pierce, Alex Schmitt, Justin Tavenner; and great grandchildren Alma Dierickx, Gloria Dierickx, June Quintana, Hayden Givens, Colton Givens, Payton Ramos, and Lily Tavenner , survive him.
In addition to his parents, a brother Christian Schmitt, Jr., preceded him in death.
The funeral will be 3:00 pm Thursday, March 7th, 2019 at LifePoint Church of Hickory with Pastor Harv Turner officiating. Burial will follow at Catawba Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 1:30 pm-3:00 pm Thursday, March 7th, 2019 at LifePoint Church of Hickory.
