Fred Grier

August 29, 1951 — January 5, 2023

Fred Grier, Jr. was born August 29, 1951, to the late Fred Grier and Zola Dunlap Grier. He graduated West Charlotte High in 1969, where he was always among the elites, a trend he kept his whole life. After high school he was drafted in 1970 and served in the United States Army.

After serving two years he then went on to Central Piedmont Community College, where he earned an associate degree in automechanics. He worked many years at Solectron and Frieghtliner corporations with technical positions. He was a happy, fun, loving, smart, hardworking, kind hearted, successful and devoted husband. Fred enjoyed telling jokes (which he had for days). He never met a stranger and he brought joy to all he met with his charming storytelling and unorthodox jokes. Fred loved to watch sports, especially his favorite teams the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Detroit Tigers, and the UNC Tarheels. Fred was an all around gifted athlete that played sports his whole life, with some of the greatest athletes of his time. From basketball and baseball in high school to being drafted in US Army and playing on the Military Men's US SHAPE Team. After serving his country, he played 4 Seasons Ball Club and Hoskins Giants where he proceeded to thrive and create countless friendships and bonds. He was so talented and skilled at so many things from hanging ceilings, subcontracting, working on vehicles, bowling and even was a DJ with some of the smoothest steps on the dance floor. There was nothing this man wasn't capable of doing. And as he would often say when he met someone, "You just shook the hand of a 'Great Man'." And a Great Man he was. He mentored and helped raise nephews, nieces, and never hesitated to help anyone he could. There were no boundaries to his love and he will forever be loved and missed.

In addition to his parents, Fred was preceded in death by his sister Joyce Anne Grier-Hancock and his best friend Marcos Velazquez.

Left to cherish Fred's memories his lifelong "Ride or Die" loving wife Veronica "Roni" Grier, his son Marcus, his daughter-in-law Jolaine, step-daughter Essence, 6 grandchildren Quinlan, Brooklyn, Adisyn, Lehman, Roman and Winston, his friend Sherry, his sister Gwendolyn Hicks, his nephews Angelo and Ambrose, his niece Alysha, his cousin Torrie, and all of New York, North Carolina, Detroit, and a host of relatives and friends.
