Gary Detter

Gary Cline Detter, 85, of Newton passed away Friday, May 5, 2023 at Iredell Memorial Hospital. Born March 11th, 1938 he was the son of the late Oliver Wardell Detter and Ava Elizabeth Cline Detter.

Gary served in the Army National Guard for nine years. He was a devoted Boy Scouts of America Leader and received the Lamb Award. He was a longtime member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church and recently loved attending Piney Grove Baptist Church in Lenoir. Gary was a member of Foothills Antique Power Association of North Carolina. He worked for 30 years at Duke Power and was a reserve sheriff's deputy and a volunteer fireman.

Gary is survived by his wife of eleven years, Sandra Detter; his daughters LaGina Gibson (and husband Gene) of Sherrills Ford, Sandra Bumgarner of Newton, Shannon Bishop (and husband Randy) of Mountain View, Beth Dennis (and husband Steve) of Sylvia, NC, and Mary Andrews (and husband David) of Cameron, NC; his beloved aunt Dorothy "Dot" Cline Pierce of Newton; his sister Libby Detter of Greensboro; his brother Norris Detter (and wife Billie) of Mountain View; his eight grandchildren Valerie Barney, Ryan Gibson, Will Bumgarner, Austin Bumgarner, Majerle Bishop, Corbin Bishop, David Andrews, and Elizabeth Andrews; his great-grandchildren Colton Barney, Elyse Barney, Kynsley Bumgarner, Ava Bumgarner, and Shaelynne Allen; and his special friends Virgil Woodruff, Cap, Terry and Teresa Shook.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife Donna Glynn York Detter.

A memorial service will be held 4:00 PM Thursday, May 11th, 2023 at Jenkins Funeral Home. Military honors and the visitation will follow the service.
