George Harold Potter, 89, of Conover, North Carolina, passed from this life to his eternal reward with Jesus Christ on Monday, March 2nd, 2015, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte. Born December 25th, 1925, in Bangor, Maine, George was the son of William Lewis Potter and Laura M. Helms Potter. George is survived by his beloved wife of 66 years, Elaine Barbara Brown Potter of Conover, North Carolina; two daughters, Jean Ellen Tir and her husband Steven Tir of Kosice, Slovakia and Barbara Elaine Potter of Conover, North Carolina; and a grandson, Steven George Andrew Tir of Kosice, Slovakia. George loved and had a special place in his heart for his only grandchild Stevie. Uncle George is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews, as well as dear friends. George was predeceased by his four sisters and four brothers, whom he dearly loved and missed. As a Navy veteran of WWII, George proudly served his nation aboard the USS Bogue aircraft carrier, both in the North Atlantic and in the Pacific. George enjoyed keeping in touch with his many of his Navy and veteran friends. George worked for many years at Sanborn's Motor Express in Bangor, Maine, where he served with honor. While working for Sanborn's, George was proud of obtaining a 25-year Safe Driver's Award. Many life-long friendships were developed during George's employment at Sanborn's Motor Express. In his own words, George wanted to be remembered as a "loving husband, father, Papa, brother, friend and dedicated Christian." For decades, he was a faithful member of the Apostolic Lighthouse Church (Pastor Charles Hurst) in Bangor, Maine. In his later years, George was pleased to attend the Christ Alive Church (Pastor Mark Ivey) in Newton, North Carolina. Funeral services will be held in Bangor, Maine with burial at Pine Grove Cemetery; however, a memorial service will be held at a later date in Newton, North Carolina, for close family and friends.
