Gertrude (Gertie) Gillis Peacock, 85 of Hickory, formerly of Asheville, NC died peacefully on Tuesday, August 30, 2016 under hospice care at Kingston Residence of Hickory. A native of Waycross, Georgia, she was the daughter of James Tifton and Leola G. Gillis, Sr. Also preceding in death is her husband of 50 years, Walter Harold Peacock. Mrs. Peacock accompanied her husband during 21 years of military service in Alabama, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Texas and New Jersey and overseas in Denmark, Thailand and Germany before retiring in Asheville, NC She was a devoted wife and mother who volunteered throughout her life in her children’s school, church and community. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Asheville, NC for 30 years and then joined the First Presbyterian Church of Hickory in 2009 when she moved to Hickory. She is survived by sons, Walter Gillis Peacock and wife Eve of College Station, Texas and Wayne David Peacock and wife Kim of Athens, Ga; a daughter, Susan Peacock Moser and husband Bill of Newton; grandchildren include Walter McLendon Peacock and wife, Yichi, Katharine Moser Hulcher and husband Zach, Rebecca Marie Moser, Benjamin McLendon Peacock, Emma Tyner Peacock and Nathan Tyner Peacock; several nieces and a nephew. A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 pm, Friday, September 9, 2016 at First Presbyterian Church of Hickory with the Rev. Heather Wood Davis officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the fellowship hall. A private visit to the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery will be held by the family where Mrs. Peacock will be interred with her husband.
