Iris Flowers

Iris Brommel Flowers passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 5, 2021 at Frye Regional Hospital, surrounded by her loving family. Born in Bristol England on June 22, 1928, she was the daughter of Harold and Lily Brommel. She arrived in the US and became a US citizen at three years old in Brooklyn, New York where she later met the love of her life Lee (Bill) Flowers. They had three children together before Bill’s premature death from heart attack in 1977. Iris went back to school and received her BA degree (Summa Cum Laude) at the age of 49 and augmented her passion for reading as a Librarian in Palm Beach County Florida, where she moved to be near her three children.
After Bill’s death, she was introduced to and developed anenthusiasm for Buddhism which took her to many retreats and lengthy studies, resulting in a life-long practice. In Florida, she was active in the Miami Buddhist group and later started a West Palm Beach group to support her local Buddhist community. She later moved to Hickory North Carolina to be closer to new grandchildren and to serve as a base for frequently visiting her other grandchildren in Texas and Florida.
Iris loved to read, meditate, crochet, swim, walk, play with her grandkids and travel with her adult children. She is noted for teaching her grandchildren critical skills such as bicycle riding and swimming, and importantly an attitude for living their life. In Hickory, she was a member of the Universal Unitarian Church where she enjoyed their community gardens and the friendships that grew from that fellowship. She shared her joy and knowledge of Buddhism by organizing curricula and leading local meditation groups until her advancing age began to limit her activities. She cherished the friends she made from these endeavors.
Iris is survived by her three children, Lee D. Flowers and wife, Wendy Flowers of Weston, Florida; her son, David J. Flowers and wife Melanie Flowers of Austin, Texas and her son, and Thomas H. Flowers and wife Roseann Flowers of Hickory, North Carolina who provided endless love and support for Iris in Hickory. Iris is also survived by six loving grandchildren, Kelly, Hayden, Merrick, Colin, Thomas and Melissa, who were the overwhelming apple of Iris’s eye.
Iris’s wishes did not include a funeral, so the family will honor her wishes and have a family vacation together. We celebrate our love for Iris every day.
