Jackie Byron Bell, 73 of Pope Drive, Newton died, Wednesday, March 28, 2012 at Palliative CareCenter & Hospice of Catawba Valley. Born April 2, 1938, he was the son of the late Waddy Leonard Bell & Vee Muriel Cline Bell Arrowood. Jackie was a U.S. Army veteran and member of New Jerusalem Lutheran Church in Newton. He was an honorary life member of Lutheran Men and in various committees?, including the church council, as well as chairing the Cemetery Committee. He retired from Duke Power as Chief Operator in the Hydro Division for the Catawba River, for which he loved. He was also a former assistant Scout Master. He was a Loving husband, father and grand-father and friend to many in the community, affectionately known as ?Bop? by his grand-children. He fought a courageous battle with Leukemia. The family wishes to thank Dr. Bayard Powell and the entire staff of Wake Forest University Medical Center. In addition to his wife of 54 years, Patricia Jean Cauthen Bell of the home; two daughters, Cathy Bell Jones & husband Tim of Hickory and Caren Bell Howard and husband Tim of Newton; a brother, James ?Jim? Arrowood and wife Janice of Hickory; four grand-children, Joshua Byron Jones, Jennifer Renee Jones, Emily Nicole Howard and Sara Elizabeth Howard survive him. The funeral will be 4:00 p.m. Saturday, March 31, 2012 at New Jerusalem Lutheran Church in Hickory. The Rev. Randall Cauble will officiate. Burial will follow at New Jerusalem Lutheran Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends 2:00-3:45 p.m. on Saturday, March 31, 2012, immediately prior to the service, at the church.
