J.C. Smith

December 31, 1969 — November 12, 2016

J.C. "Jay" Smith, son of the late Forrest and Georgia Crider Smith passed away Saturday November 12, 2016 at Frye Regional Medical Center. He was a 30 year Veteran of the US Postal Service, having started work in the days when mail was transported by bus and trains while traveling four or five states for many years. For many years, he knew the names of every town in NC having a postal drop-off. After the demise of the bus/train service he became a letter carrier in his home town of Hickory. Jay joined the US Army at the age of 17. Doing various duties, he spent 18 months in Korea serving in a MASH unit similar to a very popular TV program. For his work in the medical unit he was awarded several medals. Being a private person, he enjoyed reading and watching old western TV shows and the political scene. Blue Grass was one of his favorite forms of music. Jay had a great sense of humor and enjoyed a joke. Surviving is his wife of 41 years, Sue Williams Smith; a daughter, Pamela Smith of Newton; two sons, Jeffrey Smith and wife Angela of Morganton and Stephen Smith and wife Billi of Conover; a sister, Betty Smith Miller of Scottsdale, AZ; numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Robin in February of this year. He also lost his beloved canine friend Sam recently. The funeral will be 1:00pm Wednesday November 16, 2016 at Plateau United Methodist Church with Pastor Dave McHale officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:00pm to 1:00 pm at the church prior to the service. Memorials may be sent to the Humane Society of Catawba County...
