Joann "Granny Jo" Stephens, 76, of Hickory died Saturday, June 1, 2019 at Carolina Caring. Born Saturday, January 23rd, 1943 she was the daughter of Z.T and Eula Lingerfelt. She was a lifelong member of Winklers Grove Baptist Church.
Her spouse of 59 years, Grady Stephens, two brothers, Jerry Lingerfelt and wife Betty, and Harold Lingerfelt, three sisters, Lois Johnson, Margaret Bumgarner and Sue Wilson and husband Jack; four sons, Barney Stephens and wife Kathy, Barry Stephens and wife Linda, Benny Stephens and wife Piper and Steven Buckner and wife Sarah; a daughter, Beatrice Lemons and husband Ricky; eleven grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews survive her.
In addition to her parents, a brother, James Lingerfelt, and a sister Faye Zimmerman preceded her in death.
Joann was a lifelong member of Wínkler’s Grove Baptist Church. Over the years “Granny Jo” kept and loved on numerous babies and children in her home and she was also a talented seamstress that could do wonders with a needle an thread.
“Granny Jo” was a loving, selfless person that was devoted to her husband. She loved her family, and her friends unconditionally. She lived her life for Jesus and serving others. She was always there for anyone who needed her, from sewing a hem, making a meal, giving encouragement and mostly pointing them to Jesus.
A celebration of her life will be 3:00 pm, Wednesday, June 5, 2019 at Winkler's Grove Baptist Church with Rev. Dale Faulkenbury and Rev. Paul Deal officiating. The family will receive friends an hour prior to the service.
