John Harris Bigelow 83 of Hickory died Sunday, January 13th, 2019 at his home. John H. Bigelow was born April 24, 1935 in NY, NY. He was the son of Harris and Elizabeth Bigelow of New Canaan, CT. John was married to Susan French Bigelow of Wilton, CT and lived in Hickory for 33 years. They had two children; John Storrs Bigelow of Raleigh, NC and Leslie Bigelow Clark of Franklinton, NC, and five grandchildren.
By a former marriage, John had four children; David Bigelow of Hudson, NC, Diane Welton of Stonnington, CT, Linda McCue of Dover, NY and Lori Story of Granite Falls, NC, and seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
Pastor Bigelow was ordained at Corinth Reformed Church of Hickory in 1999. He was assistant pastor of seniors, worked with the Cub Scouts and Eagle Scouts of Corinth. He helped organize Downtown Development Association, The Albert Ivy Library Association, and involved with the Hickory Farmer's Market where he sold hand-crafted silver jewelry and copper wire "Memory Trees". He pastored several churches from 2000-2015.
Pastor Bigelow studied at the University of Connecticut, Carson Newman College, Caldwell Theological seminary in Salisbury, NC. He had a passion for photography, writing, reading, bird-watching, gardening, and creating beautiful silver jewelry, copper wire trees, nature photography cards and folk music where he hosted folk musicians in Ridgefield, CT. He was a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborn in Fayetteville, NC and was a NRA Rifle Instructor in Stamford, CT.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 am Wednesday January 16, 2019 at Corinth Reformed Church in Hickory.
