John Davis

December 31, 1969 — May 8, 2024

John Thomas "Tommy" Davis passed away peacefully at Carolina Caring on May 8th at 6:30 AM. He was born in Burke County on October 28, 1944 to the late Eligah and Evelyn Davis.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Amalean Williams and Mary Sue Heavner, and a brother, Billy Davis.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 57 years Patricia Davis of Hickory, three sons and one daughter; Greg (Lula) Davis of Valdese, Candace (Daniel) Wright of Connelly Springs, Jeremy (Tina) Davis of Hickory, Shaun (Wendy) Davis of Hickory, 13 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.

Tommy grew up as the fifth of seven children and loved to tell stories of his childhood adventures and life experiences. He served his country honorably in the Army's 82nd Airborne Division as a young man and married his beloved wife soon after leaving the service. Tommy was one of the founders of Mountain View Recreation and was well known to the community as a favorite umpire with his trademark call of "Yeah Boy!" He retired from a long career as a truck driver for IFH in 2013 after many faithful years of service. As a long-time member of Mountain View Mennonite Church, he served the Lord through his acts of service and leadership. He loved camping with his family- especially his grandchildren. Good days for him included watching and cheering for Dodgers baseball and Tarheel basketball. He loved to serve his family and friends. He was known to say "if you go home hungry it's your own fault". Tommy never met a stranger, loved to laugh, and worked hard to provide for his family. Well done, good and faithful servant.

In lieu of flowers, Tommy requested that donations be made to the organization Tunnel to Towers Foundation.

The funeral will be 3:00 P.M. Saturday, May 11, 2024 at the Mountain View Mennonite Church. 5252 NC 10-hwy Hickory, NC 28602 with Rev. Church Hostetter and Rev. Joe Bellone officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:00-3:00 P.M. at the church, and burial will follow in the church cemetery.
