John Tolar Furmage Sr., 79, of Newton died Monday, December 9, 2024 at his residence. Born in Parkton, North Carolina on May 3rd, 1945 he was the son of the late Robert J. Furmage Sr. and Blanche McCracken Furmage. John was a man of God, and an avid bee keeper. He was a member of Trinity United Church of Christ and he served in the National Guard and reserves in Parkton, NC. He was a believer in education and was a Mason and a Shriner. He spent his career in land surveying, and was the Hickory City Surveyor. He was also State Surveyor of the Year in 2006. He was a boyscout master and coached little league for many years, and he loved spending time outdoors.
His loving wife of 35 years, Margaret "Margie" Furmage, two sons, John T Furmage Jr. (Dona) and Tim Furmage (Ginger); three daughters, Kelly Hathaway, Mary Jones, and Romi McCurry; fifteen loving grandchildren and numerous neices, nephews and friends survive him.
In addition to his parents, his siblings, Bobby Furmage, Nell Furmage McMillan, Doris Furmage Linebarger and Ruth Furmage Wadford preceded him in death.
A memorial service to celebrate his life will be 2:00 P.M. Friday, December 13, 2024 at Trinity United Church of Christ with Pastor Peggy Stout officiating. The family will receive friends at the church from 12:45-2:00 P.M.
