John Niman

December 31, 1969 — April 27, 2024

John William Niman II, 80, of Hickory, NC, passed away late Saturday evening, April 27, 2024,
at Lenoir Healthcare, Lenoir, NC, with his daughters by his side. He was born on July 17, 1943,
in Beloit, WI, the third child and first son of William H. and Jeanette E. (Purves) Niman.

John graduated from Beloit Memorial High School with the Class of 1962 after suffering from
rheumatic fever, thus delaying his graduation by a year. Shortly after graduation, he enlisted in
the U.S. Navy and trained as a Radioman. Throughout his naval career, John served in Nea
Makri, Greece; Yokohama and Yokosuka, Japan; Long Beach, California; Norfolk, Virginia; and
Naples, Italy. He served aboard the USS Oklahoma City (CL-91/CLG-5/CG-5) during the
Vietnam War, and while in Yokosuka, Japan, he handled much of the radio traffic between the 7th
Fleet and the USS Pueblo (AGER-2) as it was being intercepted by North Korean patrol boats in
international waters in 1968. John was extremely proud of his service to our country and was
eager to share his many experiences. Following his naval service, John worked for McDonnell
Douglas supporting their Multi-Hospital Information System. Later, he became a self-employed
cabinetry installer. John was an avid family genealogy researcher upon his retirement from the
cabinetry business.

John was preceded in death by his parents, an older sister, Sandra Mogilicki, and a younger
sister, Sharon Jordan.

John leaves behind his son Steven (Dagmar) Niman of Neustadt bei Coburg, Germany, his
daughters Kelly (Willie) Plumley of Hickory, NC, and Katie (Erika) Kohoutek of Glen Carbon,
IL, sisters Marilyn (Jim) Walker of Longmont, CO, and Sheila Schoenfeld of Beloit, WI, a
brother Thomas (Susan) Niman of Kenosha, WI, brother-in-law Tom Jordan of Beloit, WI,
grandchildren Aaron and Lea Niman, Kelsey, Landon, and Emelyn Plumley, John Kohoutek and
Eden Bishopp, and many nieces and nephews.

Per his wishes, there will be no service. Cremation will be conducted, and the U.S. Navy will
perform a burial at sea.
