John Whitman

January 1, 1936 — November 10, 2018

John Whitman, Sr., beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend to many, went to be home with Jesus on Saturday, November 10, 2018. He was 82. Born January 1, 1936 and raised in Connecticut, he served in the Marine Corps was honorably discharged, then met and married the love of his life, Lorraine, in 1959. While in Connecticut, he was employed by the Winston School System and owned his own painting business.  He was an active member of the Torrington First Assembly of God.

He and Lorraine moved to Hickory, in 1999 where he was employed at the Valley Hills Mall. He eventually became the carousel manager which he truly enjoyed.  He loved interacting with the children and families and shared the gospel at every chance. His hobbies included weightlifting, knife throwing, billiards and target shooting.  He had a huge heart; never met a stranger and helped anyone he could.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Clare Whitman, Sr. and Edna J. Whitman, a brother, Clare Whitman, Jr., a sister, Rosemary Whitman, and brother and and sister-in-law, nieces and nephews.

He is survived by his loving wife, Lorraine Whitman, two sons, John Whitman, Jr. and Richard Whitman; a daughter, Lillian Shronce, a grandson, Stewart Warner, sisters-in-law Arlene Mule Webb, Charlotte Goewey and other relatives.

Thank you from his family to all who befriended him, for there could be no better friends in life.

He will be sadly missed, forever loved and never forgotten. There is joy in our hearts knowing one day we will be together again.

Per his wishes, there will be no services.
