Julia Barrier Smith Brookbank, 90 of Whispering Pine Drive, Newton died Tuesday, August 24, 2010 at Frye Regional Medical Center. Born June 6, 1920, she was the daughter of the late Jesse Travis & Julia Zelma Sechrest Smith. Julia worked 18 years at Tomlinson Furniture and was a member of First Christian Church in Newton. Her husband of 72 years, Samuel Harden Brookbank, Sr. of the home; three daughters, Beverly Nielson of Morganton, Brenda & James Shuskey of Archdale, Sandra & Michael Hicks of Orlando, Fl.; two sons, Charles Larry & Erma Brookbank of Stuart, Va., Samuel H. Brookbank, Jr. & Beverly of Asheboro; a sister, Peggy & Lloyd Hedgecock of Burlington, NC and 10 grand-children, Angela Payne, Christy Payne, James Shuskey, Jr., Melissa Ann Shuskey, Julie Hanson, Robin Gerstemeier, Dana Anderson, Charles Larry Brookbank, Jr., Tammy Rogers, and Jessica Brookbank; 11 great grand-children and one Great, great grand-child survive her. The funeral will be 2:00 p.m. Friday, August 27, 2010 at First Christian Church in Newton. Pastor Gary Patterson will officiate. Entombment will follow at Catawba Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Thursday, August 26, 2010 from 7-9:00 p.m. at Jenkins Funeral Home Chapel. Condolence messages may be sent to www.jenkinsfuneralhome.net.
