Leonard Eugene Jones, 73, of 19th St NW Hickory and part-time resident of Surfside Beach, SC died Monday August 6, 2012 at Catawba Valley Medical Center. Born September 7, 1938 in West Virginia, he was the son of the late Leonard Luther and Lillian Virginia Kersey Jones. A US Army Veteran, he was a member of Hickory American Legion Post 48. He was also a member of Blackburn Baptist Church and the Horseshoe Pitchers Association, where he was a 2011 Hall of Fame inductee. After a lifelong career in trucking, he most recently drove a truck for White Wholesale Tire Company. He leaves his wife of nearly 25 years, Carolyn Holstein Jones, two daughters, Deborah Lynn Sundin and husband Jack of Ravenswood, WV and Angela Sue Jones of Greenville, NC; a stepson, Johnny Dale of Greenville, NC; a sister, Frances Lanham of Romance, WV; two grandsons, Justin Balser and his wife Billie and Cody Balser; three step-granddaughters, Lauren Sayre and husband Stephen, Alyssa Riley and husband Evan and Grace Sundin survive him. The funeral will be 5:00 p.m. Wednesday August 8, 2012 at Jenkins Funeral Home Chapel with pastors Geary Walton and Chuck Bryant officiating. The American Legion Post 48 will provide military honors. The family will receive friends from 4-5:00 pm Wednesday, August 8, 2012, one hour prior, in the chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Blackburn Baptist Church Building Fund 5105 West NC10 Hwy. Hickory, NC 28602 or to Vision Outreach Ministry 3781 Herman Sipe Road Conover, NC 28613.
