Lewis Charles Carpenter passed away peacefully in his sleep of natural causes on November 9, 2018. He was born April 7, 1944 in Gastonia, NC to Will and Hazel Carpenter. Lewis was a school teacher in Gaston County for over 30 years. Most of that time was spent teaching history at Bessemer City High School where he also coached women’s softball and basketball, and was the official scorekeeper and public-address announcer for the baseball team. He is survived by his two sons, Matthew Carpenter of High Point, NC, and wife Pamela Lepley, their daughters Alexandra and Willa, and Nathan Carpenter of Huntersville, NC, and wife Sara, their sons Philip and Levi. He is also survived by his two sisters, Anne Anthony, her husband Thurman, and Linda Hosier, her husband Larry, both of Lincolnton, NC. A memorial service will be held on Sun. November 18th, 2018 at 2:00PM at Pisgah United Methodist Church 2582 Gastonia Hwy, Lincolnton, NC 28092. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital at www.stjude.org, or 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105. In the words of Lewis’s former student, recording artist Jimmy Wayne (Barber) “Respectfully, please refrain from leaving sympathetic messages. Instead call a schoolteacher that you appreciate and let them know how much you appreciate them. Don’t wait.”
