Mae Pocta

Mae Alyce Goodyear Pocta, 86, of Charlotte, North Carolina, entered into eternal rest Sunday, October 4, 2020. Mae passed peacefully at home, surrounded by loved ones. A celebration of her life will be at a later date.
Mae was born January 19, 1934 in Cleveland, Ohio, daughter of the late Howard E. Goodyear and Dorothy R. (Erman) Goodyear. She was a graduate of John Marshall High School and worked briefly as a “computer” for NASA, then known as NACA. She wed E.J. (Bud) Pocta July 18, 1953 and together raised 5 children and provided foster care for a family of 4 girls, who became family as well. After her husband passed, she went to work as a breakfast hostess for the Hampton Inn, where she made many friends.
Mae will be sorely missed by all who knew her. She was a gracious host to her friends and very involved with her family. She is survived by her daughters, Karen L. Pocta of Charlotte, NC and Kathy Pocta Hanson (Jim) of Sherrills Ford, NC, Jacci Orosz (Lou) of Medina, OH; son John D. Pocta (Tracy) of Charleston, SC; brothers David K. Goodyear (Lena) and William A. Goodyear (Mary Ann) of Brunswick, Ohio; 10 grandchildren, Derek Hanson, Brittany Hanson, Angela Pocta, Jacob Pocta, Nathan Pocta, Tori Pocta, Todd Klein, Chuck Klein, Adam Klein & Andrew Klein and 4 great grandchildren, whom she loved more than anything, and many well loved nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, E.J. (Bud) Pocta, and sister Alma Applegate (Richard).
Mae’s nickname was “Saint Mae.” She was always thinking of others and would do anything to help a friend or relative. She never met a stranger. Everyone who met her became a friend, and ultimately, family. She had several caregivers this past year, and loved them all, as they did her.
In the last couple years, she would often ask how old she was. When we told her 86, she would exclaim, “86?! Do you know of anyone older than me? That’s crazy!”...”Frankly, Scarlet…” She was thankful & felt blessed for the years she had.
The family would like to thank Carolina Caring Hospice for their expert care and heartfelt kindness which made it possible for Mom to be at home.
