Marie Smith

Marie Wade Smith, 94, died of natural causes May 8, 2021, surrounded by loved ones in her daughters' home in Fuquay Varina, NC. She was born on September 22, 1926 in Buena Vista, Georgia to Samuel Jennings Wade and Luda (Eckard) Wade. At the age of 13, Marie's family moved north from Buena Vista to Connelly Springs, NC.

Marie graduated from Hildebran High School, Class of 1943. She married Paul Edward Smith in 1950 and they built their home and raised three daughters just up the dirt road from her family home place. Once their girls were grown, Marie worked for Lindsay's Hosiery Mill, Premier Hosiery and Burlington Industries.

Marie was an avid artist. She enjoyed taking painting classes and produced many beautiful works of art.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her brothers: Miles, Nelson and Jerry; her husband, Paul; and a beloved daughter, Pamela Smith Gabriel. Marie is survived by her daughters: Paula Smith Atwood and Penny Smith Wiard of Fuquay-Varina, NC; son-in-law, Samir Gabriel (Karyl M.) of Greensboro, NC; grandchildren, Malindi E. Powers (Michael) of Charlotte, NC; Jennifer Gabriel (Jeremy Cram) of Greensboro, NC; Paul Gabriel of Greensboro, NC; Amy Wiard (Dhon Johnson) of Greensboro, NC; Matthew Wiard (Kathryn) of Ashburn, VA; great grandchildren, Lily Powers, Holden Wiard, Rowan Wiard; a stepgrandson, Douglas McClusky (Sofie); treasured nieces, nephews, cousins, church family and friends.

A graveside service will be held at 11:00 am, June 26, at Friendship United Methodist Church, Connelly Springs, NC.  Pastor Mitch Boughman will be officiating with a special prayer offered by Pastor Bobby Hallyburton. Facemasks are encouraged.
