Marlene LaWander Snipes, 73 of Newton went home to be with the Lord Saturday, September 12th, 2015 at Catawba Regional Hospice. Born April 11th, 1942 she was the daughter of the late Vernon Smith and Dorothy Louise Smith. She was a nurse for 44 years, serving at Abernethy Laurels for 33 years. Three daughters, Donna Davis of Newton, Sharon Maxey of Newton and LaWander Howard and husband David of Newton; three sons, Jim Maxey of Newton, Calvin Maxey and wife Tina of Newton and Ricky Overstreet of Conover; two sisters, Linda Murphy and Sherry Baker; six brothers, Steve Smith, David Tucker, Randy Tucker, Ricky Tucker, Johnny Smith and Jeff Smith survive her. Her brother, Ronnie Smith, preceded her in death. A Celebration of Marlene's life will be 11:00 am Thursday September 17, 2015 at Woodlawn Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Ed Yount officiating. The family will receive friends from 10-11:00 am Thursday at the church.
