Martin Exon

June 16, 1960 — December 24, 2018

Martin Eric Exon, 58, Hickory, passed away at home on Monday, December 24, 2018 surrounded by his wife, Megan Miniea Exon, and all nine of his children.

Marty was born to Keith and Marilyn Exon on June 16, 1960, in North Vancouver, Canada.  He graduated Stephen Leacock Collegiate Institute; the University of Waterloo in Ontario with a Bachelor of Science Honors Degree; and the University of Windsor where he received his Ontario Teacher’s Certificate. He was an elected member of the Canadian Society of Chemical Technology. In 1998 Mr. Exon moved to the United States, where he worked for BASF and BSN Medical, before retiring in 2015 due to Parkinson’s Disease.

An extremely gifted and talented man, Marty’s interests were numerous and varied. He served on the board for Mountain View Fire Department, where he often worked as their “unofficial” photographer, taking pictures both manually and with drone photography.  Before his health began to decline, Mr. Exon was the owner of Mountain View Photography. An expert at computer technology, he built his own 3D printer; designed a solar panel grid; taught himself welding; and constructed his own greenhouse and hydroponics’ garden.  A gentle, patient and kind man, Marty’s love of learning and teaching his children new things were unsurpassed. He was an exemplary father, who adored his family, and lived life with the most wonderful sense of humor.

Marty is survived by his wife, Megan, whom he married in 2012, with a renewing of their vows in honor of their love and dedication on April 1, 2018; his children, Scott Exon of Greensboro, Paul Exon of Granite Falls, Christopher Exon/Lauren Riley of Granite Falls, Katie Regier of Hickory, Ty Keller, Taylor Ribbe, Nik Exon, Elizabeth Exon, and Jemma Exon at home in Hickory; his parents Marilyn and Keith Exon of Toronto, Canada; siblings, David Exon of Toronto, Tamara Exon Dean/Rob Dean and their children Kaitlyn, Kyle and Ayden Dean of Vancouver, BC, Canada; and his in-laws Kathryn and Edwin Dews of Salisbury. He is also survived by a host of relatives, in-laws, and friends, including his former wife Darlene Wiggins Exon.

The celebration of Marty’s life will be held at Jenkins Funeral Home Chapel, Saturday, January 5, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. with a reception to follow.
