Marvin Leatherman

February 6, 1943 — June 1, 2022

Marvin Ray Leatherman went home to be with the Lord at Abernathy Laurels in Newton on June 1, 2022, at the age of 79. Married to his loving wife, Brenda, whom he met his senior year in college, and with whom he shared 57 wonderful years of marriage.

The son of Arthur Hugh and Mary Frye Leatherman, Marvin was born and raised in the Catawba area. He accepted Christ at a young age and attended Mt. Ruhama Baptist Church in Maiden.

Marvin graduated top of his class in 1960 from Bandys High School. Due to his advanced scholarships, he attended NC State University, graduating again at the top of his class in 1964 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mathematics. He was the product development manager at Bassett Furniture for over 43 years.

A man of few words, when Marvin spoke, all in the room listened intently. He thoroughly enjoyed ballroom and country-western dancing. He could be found tearing up the dance floor every Friday/Saturday night for decades. Marvin and Brenda were talented ballroom dancers who loved the sport, were fun to watch, and even won awards through the years at events as they traveled.

Music spoke to his soul, and he loved sitting for hours listening to his favorites. He also loved to laugh, which his wicked sense of humor could get anyone to laugh – tickling himself just as much as anyone else.

Marvin was a proud grandfather of his six grandchildren, whom he loved dearly – Noah and Chloe Leatherman, Brady and Carter Leatherman, and Izzie and Jackie Lanes.

Marvin was preceded in death by his mother and father, five brothers and in recent years, both sons, Doug and Nelson Leatherman. He is survived by his wife, Brenda; and daughter, Abby Leatherman Lanes; sister, Elsie Sanders; brother, JD Leatherman; daughters in law, Angie Leatherman and Anissa Leatherman; son in law, Ted Lanes; as well as many family and friends.
