Mary May Woods, 95, of Newton, died Saturday, October 16, 2021 at Abernethy Laurels. Born January 19th, 1926 she was the daughter of the late James Albert Groome and Gladys May Groome. Mary was born and raised in Philadelphia and was married to her husband Paul for 73 years. She was a loving mother to their three children. She and her husband have been active volunteers with JAARS Inc. for many years where she worked in human resources, a secretary to the maintenance department and helped attend the children in the pre-school. While on a volunteer missionary assignment in Brazil, she taught music and volunteered sewing children's clothing and bedding and helping stocking provisions for the children. She was and active member of St. Paul's Reformed Church in Newton where she served on the missions committee.
Her husband, Paul Stanley Woods of Newton; a daughter, Ruth Sparks and husband Ed of CA; two sons, Robert Woods and wife Connie of FL and Steven Woods and wife Conni of MD; two brothers, Roger Groome of NC and John Groome of VA; five grandchildren and nine great grandchildren survive her.
The funeral will be 2:00 pm Friday October 22, 2021 at St. Paul's Reformed Church in Newton with the Rev. Dr. Rob Helton and the Director of Spiritual Life at Abernethy Laurels, Susan Roddey officiating. Burial will follow at St. Paul's Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 1-2:00 pm Friday at the church.
