Mattie Ruth Coates Greenard Gonzalez, daughter of the late Leroy and Annie Coates, was born on March 19, in Cleveland County, North Carolina. Mattie attended Ridgeview High School in Hickory. She retired from Rubatex Corporation, as well as the Piedmont Wagon Company, where she was the first woman to drive for the public transportation system. Mattie later resumed serving in home-health care over the past several years. She was a proud member of Greater Faith Missionary Baptist Church, where she diligently served on the Usher Board, as President. Mattie was a member the Order of the Eastern Star.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Willie Greenard, son Willie “Chubby” Greenard, two brothers, Roy Coates, Jr., and Alvin Ray Coates, and sister Betty J. Coates.
Mattie R. Coates Greenard leaves to honor and cherish the memory of her life, three children, Jimmy Greenard, Janice Greenard, and Lynne (Philip) Myer, all of Hickory, North Carolina; Four Grandchildren, Adrian (Andrea) Myer of Knoxville, Tennessee, Bethany Myer of Hickory, North Carolina, Caitlynn Myer of Spartanburg, South Carolina, and Keionna Greenard of Winston-Salem, North Carolina; three great grandchildren, Tymir, Alicia, and Cairo.
One sister, Lillie (Leo) Martinez of Hickory, North Carolina; four brothers, Bobby Coates, Randy Coates, and Eugene Coates, all of Charlotte, North Carolina, and Johnnie Coates, of Mt. Holly, North Carolina; and a host of nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.
The family will receive friends from 1:00 PM until 2:00 pm Saturday, July 29th, 2023 at Greater Faith Missionary Baptist Church, 3147 12th Ave SE, Hickory, NC 28602.
The funeral will be 2:00 pm Saturday, July 29th, 2023 at Greater Faith Missionary Baptist Church. Burial will follow at Indian Creek Church, 5569 Indian Creek Primitive Church, Vale, NC 28168.
