Michael Shawn Riley

Michael Shawn Riley, 49, of Hickory, passed away peacefully at his home on Monday, April 14th , 2025, following several months of declining health. He was born on March 30th, 1976, to Cecil G. Riley and the late Carolyn Sue Riley of Hickory, NC.

Those left to cherish his memory include his father Cecil G. Riley, bonus mom Diane K. Riley; sisters Cecilia Netko-Riley and Carolyn Farley; his sister-in-law, Dawn Netko-Riley and brother-in-law, Rickey Farley. He is also survived by his three nephews, Corporal Devin E. Propst, Desmond Farley and Dayshaun Farley, who held a special place in his heart.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Carolyn Sue Crowder Riley, grandparents Susie Tolley Crowder, Mack E. Crowder, Edith Riley Deaton and Rush H. Riley, as well as several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Michael worked for many years as a behavioral health technician with mentally challenged individuals. He loved his job and the people in his care. Additionally, he was an avid animal lover, rescuing several stray dogs and cats. He enjoyed a good joke and was well known for his pranks. His smile was infectious, and he never met a stranger. Michael was a gifted storyteller, a brilliant chess player, and loved music.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Catawba County Animal Shelter, in Michael’s memory. He believed none of God’s creatures should feel abandoned.

The family will receive friends 3-4PM, Tuesday April 22nd, 2025 in Jenkins Funeral Home Celebration Center. The Memorial Service will follow at 4PM in Jenkins Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Steph Kelly officiating..
