At the age of 6, Michelle and her mom relocated to Greenville, SC. Jim Glass came into Michelle’s life when her mom married him in 1966. Jim was a true dad to Michelle, and they loved each other dearly Michelle’s love for the mountains started as she attended homecomings at Lees-McRae College with her mother. By the time Michelle graduated from Berea High School, she was committed to Appalachian State University. Her studies there were interrupted when she married and had two children, Sommer and Isaac Barnes. Michelle returned to ASU and juggled school and the upbringing of the children, always putting the children first. Michelle graduated from ASU in 1994. She began her employment history with Goodwin Weavers and, when they closed, started with the Boone Convention & Visitors Bureau as Public Relations Director.

From July 2010 until her passing, Michelle served as Director of Public Relations and Social Media at Explore Boone. In 2017 Michelle was awarded the Sue W. Wilmoth Award for the Advancement of Tourism, recognizing her work on ExploreBoone.com. Michelle & George Ligon met in 2004 and George quickly became a dear friend to the whole family. They were married August 5, 2006 with Sommer as a bridesmaid and Isaac as an usher. They had 15 wonderful years together. Michelle constantly promoted the Boone/Watauga area. She loved volunteering, especially for Horn in the West. She made period dresses to wear as she served as attendant at the various events. George was supportive, made chili to sell and helped Michelle plant a beautiful flower display on the property.

Michelle is survived by her daughter Sommer Barnes of Carrboro, NC, her mother Peggy Glass and brother Sam Glass of Wilmington, NC.

She was predeceased by her father. Her son, Isaac Alton Barnes, died April 2021.
