Myrtle Lee Sain 93 of Vale passed away Friday, February 22nd, 2019 at Catawba Valley Medical Center. Born May 26th, 1925 she was the daughter of Pinkney M. Davis and Texie Leatherman Davis. Myrtle worked for Gibbs MFG. in Lincolnton. She worked with her husband Paul, and together they established Appleridge Orchard and Greenhouses. Myrtle was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church for over 65 years and participated in the Adult Choir, Women’s Circle Groups, Women of the ELCA, and participated on both the Worship and Music Committee and the Trinity Lutheran Church Archives Committee. Myrtle loved her family and her friends, and the relationships that she enjoyed with them. She loved to laugh, and to make other people laugh. Although her life encountered a number of physical and health related obstacles, her determination and faith (and sometimes stubbornness) persistently led her through such difficulties. She found great joy, along with her husband Paul, in farming, gardening, and growing many different types of vegetables, ornamentals, trees, and flowers. She had the classic “green thumb” and she especially loved to meet customers and visitors of their greenhouse.
Her children, Reba Mahaffey and husband, Orrin C. Mahaffey, Pat Hopkins and husband, Job Hopkins, Rev. Robert A. Sain and wife Susan S. Sain; her brother, Jerry Davis and wife Ann; a sister, Nell Davis Cook, a large number of brothers and sisters in law, nieces and nephews; nine grandchildren Stephen and Hope Mahaffey, Paul and Jennifer Mahaffey, Emily and Zach Gettinger, Douglas Sain, Karl and Amber Sain, Susan and Jason Blalock, Jordan and Sara Sain, Jennifer Bollinger, Lindsey and Cole Karres; and 13 great-grandchildren Spencer, Piper, Ada, Evelyn “Evie”, Max, Eli, Elise, Xavier, Leia, Davis, Audrey, Ethan, Alice and two very dear friends who became part of Myrtle’s family, Thames Lutz and Sharon Lutz survive her.
A special thank you to three wonderful caregivers whose love and compassion for her brought her so much joy; Lydia Neal, Nancy Rudisill and Nancy Sailors and all of the members of Trinity Lutheran Church, her former pastors, and her current pastor, the Rev. Tommy Lineberger.
In addition to her parents, her husband of 57 years Paul Edward Sain; her sister Ruth Davis Braddy; and her
brother Leonard Wood Davis preceded her in death.
