Nile Barber

July 14, 1927 — July 28, 2018

Nile Erhard Barber of Hickory passed away on Saturday, July 28, 2018, after a period of declining health. He had just celebrated his 91st birthday.

Nile was a loving husband and father, and before his illness, spent several years caring for his beloved wife, Virginia, before she passed away in January of this year. He was a quiet, humble man who always put the needs of others before himself. Prior to his retirement, he worked as a turning lathe operator at the former Hickory Wood Turning and Carving Company, which later became Cranford Woodturning.

Born on July 14, 1927 in Hickory, NC, he was the son of the late Ivey L. Barber and Beulah Wildie Killian Barber. He was inducted in the U.S. Army in 1946 and served in Occupied Japan after World War II. He received the World War II Victory Medal, the Army of Occupation Medal-Japan, and received an honorable discharge in 1947.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 73 years, Virginia Turner Barber, infant son Joel Barber, and by sisters Emma Jean Barber Brown, Virginia Barber Price, and Ruth Barber Voorhees, and infant brother Ivey Logan Barber Jr.

He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Ivey Logan Barber III and Debbie Barber, and daughter and son-in-law Karen Barber Lands and Michael Lands; grandchildren Jonathan Barber, Clay Barber and Ashley Delozier and families, and Emily Lands, and by great-grandchildren Levi DeLozier, Guy DeLozier and Penelope Barber.

Nile adored and enjoyed spending time with his family, and especially enjoyed being around babies. In addition, he enjoyed fishing, walking, and gardening.

A memorial service will be held Sunday, August 12, at 3 p.m. at Sweetwater Presbyterian Church, 500 21st St. SE, Hickory NC.The family is being served by Jenkins Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Newton.
