Norma Cundiff

Norma Cundiff, 93, of Middletown, passed away Tuesday, June 15, 2021, at Hickory Village Memory Care, Hickory, North Carolina. Born September 5th, 1927, in Adair County, Kentucky, she was the daughter of John Leslie Banks and Bernice Banks.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband John Paul Cundiff, brothers Winfrey and Joe Banks, son Dan Cundiff and nephew Richard Banks.
She is survived by her daughter Paula Cundiff Parsons (David); grandchildren Brad Cundiff, Adam Miller (Susannah), Jansen Roberts, and Laken Roberts; great-grandchildren Ruby Miller and Banks Miller; nieces Betty Banks Brockman and Laura Banks Dixon; nephew Randall Banks; great-nephews and nieces Sheri Banks Little, MaryEllen Banks Purcell, Amy Banks, Melanie Brockman Shinbaum, Ashley Brockman Toll, Perry Dixon, Shelby Dixon and Raleigh Dixon. She is also survived by great-grand dogs Patch and Lemon.
Norma loved Kentucky and loved Middletown. Though she spent close to nine years in Florida before returning to Middletown, she told everyone who would listen that if God would bring her back to Middletown, she would never leave again. While she spent the last years of her life in North Carolina, her heart never really left Kentucky.
Norma was one of a kind and will be remembered for many things, especially her sass and spunk. She was a “strong woman” before it was widely acceptable. She had a strong opinion about everything and shared those opinions often with all who would listen. She believed in working hard and not wasting the opportunities that life presented and always encouraged others to strive to be their best. She believed there was a right way to do things and communicated that often to those she loved and cared about, especially her husband. This attention to detail saved him from everything from hitting speedbumps too quickly to the embarrassment of having his pants pulled up too high in public.
Norma worked hard at loving others and poured herself into the lives of her children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She loved being a part of football and baseball games, school events, concerts, dance recitals and anything in which her family was involved. Norma was always just a phone call away from anyone who needed an encouraging and supporting voice or a shoulder to cry on and wasn’t ashamed to sometimes throw in an empathetic mild curse word in solidarity. She never hesitated to offer sound advice even if it was unsolicited, but she became a friend to many and treasured the relationships she built. Even at the end of her life, while she endured physical pain and separation from family, she was thankful for the blessings of life, her faith in God, and for her family and friends. Norma was loved by many and will be sorely missed.
A private graveside service will be held on July 9, 2021 with Reverend Perry Dixon officiating.
