Penny Mirtsching

January 20, 1967 — December 20, 2023

Penny Neece Mirtsching, 56, of Vale, NC ran into the loving arms of our Lord on December 20, 2023, at her home surrounded by her loving family after a strong and courageous battle with cancer.

Penny was born on January 20, 1967, in Lebanon, VA at Lebanon Memorial Hospital. Penny grew up on the mountain in Dante, VA where she has shared many stories of growing up. She graduated from Ervinton High School. She moved to the Hickory area in 1985, where she met her husband and love of her life, Richard “Richie” Mirtsching while working at Burger King in Hickory, NC. They were married for 39 years, and raised a loving son, Richard “Little Richie” Mirtsching. Penny was a Police Officer for 7 years serving the Catawba County Detention Facility. She later switched careers to work in furniture where she was most recently a dedicated employee for Hank McCrorie at McCrorie wood products for the last 18 years. Penny loved her work family and always spoke fondly of each and every one of them.

Penny had a zest for life and loved her family and friends. Until her illness, Penny was an avid member and volunteer for Pink Heals NC Foothills Chapter. Penny was a selfless person who loved connecting with those affected by cancer. Always offering a supportive hand, or ear to listen to those in need from this organization. She participated in home visits, parades, supply drives for the homeless, and visits with children at Christmas. Penny was a member of Mtn. View Volunteer Fire Department for a time where she learned to extinguish fires and run calls. She found joy in making masks for the community during the beginning of the Covid-19 Pandemic.

Penny enjoyed spending time with her family, always looking for an excuse to have a get-together to celebrate a birthday, holiday, or a simple get-together for food and fellowship. She spent a lot of her free time at Wilson’s Creek where she could relax with her family and take in the beautiful scenery.
Penny is survived by her Husband, Richard H. Mirtsching of Vale, NC., her son, Richard A. Mirtsching and wife Kayla and grand-dog Drew of Vale, NC., her son, Jeremy Cook and wife Tosha and grand-dogs Sprocket and Diesel of Hickory, NC.; she is also survived by her brother, Rick Neece and wife Diane of Dante, VA, her brother, Eddie Neece and wife Mary of Dante, VA., a sister-in-law, Diane Vicars of Dante, VA, her “sista”, Tina Metts and husband Don of Hickory, NC, her nieces who never left her side, Mary Carol Long and Tina Asbury of Castlewood, VA, and a number of nieces, nephews, and cousins who she loved dearly.
