Robert John Allen 72 of Claremont died Thursday, December 31, 2020 at Duke Raleigh Hospital in Raleigh, NC. Born Friday, December 31st, 1948 he was the son of Charles Wesley Allen Sr. and Mary Belle Allen.
He was a retired salesman who formerly worked in industrial maintenance. He was a collector of folk art and past-president of the NC Folk Art Society. He was a member of the Folk Art Society of America Advisory Board and a former member of the Kentucky Folk Art Center Board. He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Conover, NC.
He was born in Dillon, SC, and grew up in Yazoo City, MS. He was a graduate of Yazoo City High School and Hinds Community College in Raymond, MS. He was a drummer in his high school and college bands.
Robert is survived by his wife, Margaret Day Allen of Claremont, NC; son, Christopher William Allen of Boulder, CO; daughter, Frances Leflore Allen of Dallas, NC; his sisters: Barbara Ann Allen Swayze (Carl Clayton II) of Benton, MS; and Frances Lorraine Barbour (Jeptha Fowlkes III) of Jackson, MS; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Wesley Allen, Sr., and Mary Belle McCormick Allen of Yazoo City, MS; his sisters: Mary Imogene “Genie” Allen, who died as an infant in Augusta, GA; Imogene Erickson (John) of Yazoo City; Olivia Kirk Bowman (Robert) of Bentonia, MS; and his brothers: Charles Wesley Allen, Jr.,
and David Emory Allen (Kathy) of Yazoo City.
A private graveside service will be held at Bethlehem United Methodist Church Cemetery in Claremont, with the Rev. Charmaigne Van Rooyen officiating. A celebration of life is planned for a later date.
